With 2013 now complete, here is a recap of this year's tornadoes.
January:
2 tornadoes occurred in southern Indiana during the early morning hours of January 30. A brief EF1 occurred in Orange county and an EF0 occurred in Harrison county.
May:
After no tornadoes in February, March and April, several tornadoes occurred in the month of May. Two EF0 tornadoes occurred in Vigo county on May 9. Two more EF0 tornadoes occurred in Hendricks and Putnam counties during the early morning hours of May 21. Finally, an EF0 struck Benton county on May 31.
June:
Much of June was quiet in terms of tornadoes until June 26. On that day, two EF1 tornadoes occurred in Pike and Perry counties. The Perry county tornado was on the ground for over 5 miles and caused damage in and around Tell City.
July:
One tornado occurred in July. An EF1 struck Miami county on July 10, resulting in 2 injuries. This tornado was on the ground for about 3.5 miles.
November:
This month will be remembered for the massive tornado outbreak that occurred on the 17th. This outbreak is the biggest fall tornado outbreak on record in Indiana and is one of the more impressive fall outbreaks to ever occur in the United States. 28 tornadoes struck the state with major damage occurring in numerous locations. Some of the hardest hit areas were Kokomo, Lebanon and Lafayette. For more on this outbreak, see this post.

THE GROUND FOR ABOUT 1/2 MILE AND WAS CAPTURED ON VIDEO.
THERE WAS NO DAMAGE.

NWS Confirms Tornadoes In Hendricks And Putnam Counties
The NWS in Indianapolis has confirmed 2 tornadoes occurred during the early morning hours of May 21:
A NWS Indianapolis storm damage survey today identified at least one weak tornado occurring west of Brownsburg near North Salem in the storms early Tuesday morning. Toppled trees, snapped limbs, and damage to a barn revealed evidence of rotation in the winds and damage consistent with an EF0 tornado with winds up to 85 mph. The tornado occurred around 2:40 A.M. May 21 and was part of a large line of storms that swept across central Indiana overnight causing sporadic damage in many areas.
Surveying in the Roachdale area north of Greencastle also yielded evidence of an EF0 tornado. This occurred around 2:30 A.M. just south of Roachdale where barn, shed and tree damage were observed suggesting rotating winds of up to 85 mph. This tornado was on the ground for less than a quarter mile.

NWS Confirms Tornadoes In Vigo County
The NWS in Indianapolis has confirmed two EF0 tornadoes occurred yesterday. Here is their writeup.
A thunderstorm squall line produced two small, brief tornadoes Wednesday evening near Terre Haute. The first touchdown occurred near 815 PM EDT along East Curry Road near Hultz Road about 5 miles south of Terre Haute. The tornado was observed by a storm spotter and caused damage to several trees. The tornado was rated an EF0 with winds around 80 mph. A second tornado from the same storm occurred near 825 PM EDT in Riley, about 5 miles southeast of Terre Haute. This tornado was observed by Riley volunteer fireman in a field just west of their fire station. The second tornado destroyed a small shed and downed several tree limbs. This tornado was rated an EF0 with associated winds also around 80 mph.

May 25, 2011 Tornado Outbreak - One Year Later
Today is one year since the May 25, 2011 tornado outbreak. This outbreak is a notable one in state history. In terms of tornado count, it is our second largest May tornado outbreak on record, only trailing the May 30, 2004 event (23 tornadoes). Below is a map of tornado tracks.

May 21, 1949 Killer Tornadoes
As part of a large tornado outbreak sequence across the U.S., three significant tornadoes struck portions of central Indiana on May 21, 1949. A short summary of each tornado is provided below.
Tornado #1 initially touched down southwest of Palestine, Illinois, and moved northeast through that town. All four deaths and most of the damage (peaking at F4 intensity) occurred in Illinois before the tornado moved into Sullivan county.
Tornado #2 touched down south of Cox Field on the east side of Terre Haute. The tornado damaged several houses on a NNE trek from Terre Haute to southwest of Burnett. Three deaths occurred and about ten people were injured.
Tornado #3 proved to be the worst tornado of the group. This tornado touched down near Graysville and moved through Shelburn, devastating part of that town. The tornado continued northeast, passing south of Bowling Green and ending north of Jordan in Owen county. Farms were destroyed at several points along the path. The worst damage occurred in the northwest part of Shelburn, where many homes were damaged/destroyed and thirteen people died. In all, this F4 tornado killed fourteen people on a path that may have exceeded 40 miles. Hundreds of animals were also killed.

May 14, 1972 Indianapolis Area Tornado
Today marks the 40th anniversary of one of the most powerful tornadoes to strike the Indianapolis area since records began. The tornado had a non-continuous damage path of 29 miles and first touched down on the east side of Indianapolis in the 9700 block of East Washington Street. The tornado was seen by a number of people and pictures were taken showing another funnel cloud. At the Drake Terrace Apartments, a second floor wall was blown down. In the 1100 block of North German Church Road, three steel high tension towers were blown down. Some of the worst damage occurred in the Heather Hills subdivision where ten houses were flattened. In Marion county, about 70 homes were damaged or destroyed. In Mount Comfort, clocks were stopped at 12:25 PM and a railroad car was tipped over. Near Eden, roofs were damaged and trees were uprooted. Northwest of Markleville, several mobile homes were severely damaged. The last damage occurred at Mechanicsburg where a barn was unroofed. Somewhat miraculously, nobody was killed but about 20 people were injured.
Several F3 tornadoes have struck Indianapolis since records began, but the 1972 tornado may be the only F4 that has occurred within the Indianapolis city limits. Another tornado in 1998 began in eastern Marion county but apparently did not produce F4 damage until it reached Hancock county.

NWS Confirms Tornado In Clay County
The NWS in Indianapolis has confirmed another tornado, an EF0 near Cory in Clay county. The tornado touched down briefly in a field and was about 50 yards wide.

NWS Confirms Tornado In Fountain County
The NWS in Indianapolis has confirmed an additional tornado from May 1, a brief EF0 near Yeddo in Fountain county. This tornado was on the ground for about one tenth of a mile and was 50 yards wide. Little if any damage occurred.

NWS Confirms Tornado In Montgomery County
The NWS in Indianapolis has confirmed that an EF1 tornado struck Montgomery county yesterday evening. Details are below.
At least one tornado has been confirmed as part of the severe weather that produced flooding rains, hail to golf ball size and areas of wind damage Tuesday afternoon and evening. The tornado touched down southeast of Crawfordsville near New Ross along County Road 500S between CR625E and CR700E. From eyewitness Skywarn storm spotters' reports, pictures and videos of the tornado and damage, and from Indianapolis TV stations' damage pictures, the tornado is being rated preliminarily as an EF1 with winds estimated between 100 mph and 110 mph. The tornado began at approximately 736 pm, was on the ground for about a half mile, and lifted around 737 pm. The damage rating was based on a destroyed barn, and damaged nearby homes, trees and power poles.

Tornadoes Reported In Several Counties Today
Several reports of tornadoes have come in today. As of this writing, tornadoes have been reported in Bartholomew, Fountain and Montgomery counties. There was also significant wind damage (possible tornado) in Franklin county. Storm surveys are scheduled for tomorrow and they will be posted as they come in.

2011 Year In Review
As we move toward the end of 2011, I thought it would be prudent to post a summary of this year's tornadoes. Here it is month by month.
February:
6 tornadoes occurred, all of them on the last day of the month. An EF2 tornado cut a 14 mile swath in Dubois county, injuring 1 person. A separate EF2 struck portions of Gibson and Pike counties.
April:
This was a quiet month for tornadoes until the 19th. 29 tornadoes struck the state on the 19th and into the 20th, the second most in a single outbreak. This event was followed up on the 23rd by an EF0 tornado in Jackson county. Three additional tornadoes struck the state on the 26th and 27th, one of them an EF2 which had a 5 mile path through Warrick county. There were 33 tornadoes in total during April, making it our second most active month on record.
May:
May followed a similar trend as April with a quiet early and middle part of the month. Then an EF1 tornado in Jasper county kicked things off on May 22. EF0 tornadoes struck Huntington and Ripley and Dearborn counties on the 23rd. After a 1 day break, another significant outbreak happened on May 25. This outbreak produced 22 tornadoes, including several EF2's and an EF3 in Lawrence county. The Lawrence county tornado began east of Bedford and moved northeast for about 7 miles before lifting. In all, there were 25 tornadoes in May.
June:
Like the preceding months, much of June was quiet. The first tornado was a brief EF0 in Perry county on the 19th. Another tornado struck Harrison county on the 22nd. Two more tornadoes occurred during the early morning hours of the 26th, bringing the monthly total to 4.
July:
Only 1 tornado happened in July, a brief EF0 in Newton county on the 23rd.
September:
After nearly 2 months without a tornado, an EF1 hit Jennings county early on the 26th. An EF0 struck Elkhart county the following day.
November:
An EF1 tornado touched down in Orange county on the 14th, the only tornado during November. This was the last tornado of the year, bringing the 2011 total to 72.

The NWS in Indianapolis has confirmed 2 additional tornadoes from the May 25th outbreak, an EF1 near Terre Haute and an EF0 in Parke county. Also, they have upgraded the Bedford area tornado to EF3.

3 More Tornadoes Confirmed From May 25th Outbreak; Total Stands At 21
The NWS in Paducah has confirmed 3 more tornadoes from the May 25th outbreak. One of them was an EF2 southeast of Oakland City in Pike county and the other two EF1's occurred simultaneously south of Winslow in Pike county. It appears those two are being counted as separate tornadoes.

7 Year Anniversary Of Memorial Day Weekend 2004 Tornado Outbreak
Today marks the 7 year anniversary of what was then the second biggest tornado outbreak in state history (it has since been nudged into third place by 4/19/11). The preceding days featured a series of severe weather events across the U.S., but on May 30, it was our turn to be in the crosshairs.
Early that day, the Storm Prediction Center issued a Moderate Risk roughly along and west of I-65 with a High Risk farther west in parts of Illinois. The High Risk was expanded in subsequent outlooks to include most of Indiana:
The event began rather early with the first tornado reported in Owen county a few minutes after 1 PM. It was the first of 24 tornadoes which occurred in a 9 hour time span. 2 of the tornadoes - Marengo and Peru - were rated F3 with 1 fatality in Marengo.

17 Tornadoes Now Confirmed In Indiana From May 25 Outbreak
